Children with Down Syndrome:
“Dream Catchers”
Smiles Through Art was pleased to participate in an art program for Children’s Hospital of Las Californias - Hospital Infantil de las Californias a privately-funded hospital located in Tijuana, Mexico that works with children on both sides of the border: in the Baja California and San Diego County area. A binational art program.
This binational initiative, part of the “Down Syndrome Fair” (Encuentro Síndrome de Down), engaged children and adolescents with Down Syndrome in our art program “Dream Catchers.” Using materials such as cardboard, yarn, paint, jewelry, and feathers, participants learned weaving techniques and designed their own dream catchers.
Smiles Through Art provides its services to organizations in the US and in Mexico, creating arts in healthcare programs that heal minds, increase self-esteem and creativity and improve positive health outcomes.
Dream Catchers hold deep symbolism: the circle represents the circle of life, while the colorful feathers and intricate weaving techniques serve to soothe and captivate participants, fostering a therapeutic and engaging experience.
